About the Author:
Dr. Michael J. Barnes is the proud Superintendent of Mayfield City Schools. An educator and coach for 30 years, Dr. Barnes' road to success was, at times, paved in setbacks, hardships and challenges. Growing up in Collinwood, Cleveland Heights and later in Euclid, tough lessons emerged, but family and faith prevailed.
In his memoir, Winning: Lessons on Life, Learning, and Leadership, Dr. Barnes offers a compelling and deeply personal reflection on a life shaped by resilience, purpose, and perseverance. Through meaningful stories and pivotal life moments, he chronicles both triumphs and setbacks, revealing the experiences that have defined his commitment to education and leadership.
From early life lessons to professional milestones in the boardroom and beyond, each chapter delivers insight, inspiration, and practical wisdom—culminating in a “lesson learned” that readers can apply to their own lives.
Whether you are an educator, a leader, or someone striving to grow and succeed, Winning serves as both a powerful memoir and a practical guide. It is more than a story—it is a blueprint for navigating life’s challenges with integrity, vision, and heart, and ultimately, for winning in life, leadership, and learning. He and his wife, Laverne enjoy spending time with their grown daughters, Michaela and Mia at their home in Lakewood.
Dr. Barnes is also the author of The Modern Superintendent: A Guide to Instructional Leadership and Building Literacy Together: How Families, Schools, and Communities Can Raise Children Who Think. He is a co-author of Leading with Clarity - A Reflective Journal for Educators with Tom Burton and STEM Century: It Takes A Village to Raise a 21st Century Graduate with AASA, The School Superintendent's Association.
