Local journalist and author Donald J. Modica will trace the history of South Euclid and Lyndhurst from land deeded to Moses Cleaveland's surveyors in 1796 to the cities which occupy it today.
South Euclid and Lyndhurst both began as sections of Township Number 8 in the 11th Range, named in the fall of 1796 Euclid by the surveyors of the Connecticut Land Company's first expedition to the Western Reserve, led by Moses Cleaveland. It took well over a century to develop into what it has become, and today encompasses not only South Euclid and Lyndhurst, but Euclid, East Cleveland, Cleveland Heights, Collinwood, Nottingham and Richmond Heights as well. Local journalist and author Donald J. Modica spent 25 years uncovering the forgotten and hidden history of Euclid Township, and will speak at the South Euclid-Lyndhurst Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library on Euclid Township: Origins, introducing patrons to a new and comprehensive history of all the communities of old Euclid Township.
Donald J. Modica is a former reporter and columnist for the Sun Newspapers and the News-Herald, as well as Scene Magazine, who has been teaching writing at the college level for nearly 20 years. He holds degrees in English and history from the University of Notre Dame, and in creative writing from Columbia University.
The South Euclid-Lyndhurst Branch is home to the William N. Skirball Writers' Center, a welcoming space for writers for all ages and levels of experience. The Writers' Center offers free access to private writing rooms, laptops, writing workshops and a special collection of materials on the art of writing.
This branch is a Student Success Center and a Greater Cleveland Food Bank Kids Cafe location.
