Craft talk and writing exercises

In this workshop, we'll explore how this tiny but mighty "one-breath" poem captures the natural world through a discussion of haiku techniques and example poems followed by exercises for writing your own haiku. Resources for reading and publication opportunities will also be provided.

Barbara Sabol is an Akron-based poet, editor, and teacher. Her most recent book is Mapping the Borderlands: Haibun and Tanka Prose (Sheila-Na-Gig Editions, 2025). Barbara’s short-form poetry has been recognized by the Haiku Foundation and the Haiku Society of America. She was named the 2024 Ohio Poet of the Year for her book, WATERMARK: Poems of the Great Johnstown Flood of 1889 (Alternating Current Press). Barbara’s work has been supported by the Ohio Arts Council.

About the branch

The South Euclid-Lyndhurst Branch is home to the William N. Skirball Writers' Center, a welcoming space for writers for all ages and levels of experience. The Writers' Center offers free access to private writing rooms, laptops, writing workshops and a special collection of materials on the art of writing.

This branch is a Student Success Center and a Greater Cleveland Food Bank Kids Cafe location.
