Join us for an engaging and educational program exploring the history and significance of Juneteenth.
This presentation will examine the events of June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce the enforcement of freedom for enslaved people, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln.
Participants will learn about the historical context of the Civil War era, the delayed enforcement of emancipation in Texas, and how Juneteenth evolved from local community celebrations into a nationally recognized holiday. The program will highlight the cultural traditions, resilience, and ongoing impact of Juneteenth in American history.
